Defects in an exhaust system are very dangerous because they can cause poisonous fumes to enter the cab or sleeper berth.

During the vehicle inspection test, you must be able to indicate where the oil dipstick is located; show that the oil level is within a safe operating range; and show that the oil level is above the refill mark.

Because they are exposed to less sunlight and warm up more slowly, shaded areas will remain icy and slippery after ice on other areas of the road has melted.

You may have to swing right to safely make a left turn. If there are two left turn lanes available at an intersection, you should always begin your turn in the rightmost lane.

When turning or changing lanes, you should signal early and signal continuously. Cancel your turn signal once the turn or lane change is complete.

Always signal before a turn or lane change. Begin signaling well in advance of the movement and keep the signal on continuously during the turn. If it is not self-canceling, make sure to turn your signal off after your turn or lane change is complete.

Always change lanes slowly and smoothly. If you did not see drivers who are already using the lane you wish to occupy, this will give them a chance to get out of your way or honk their horns to alert you. Always signal when changing lanes.

On a bus, all baggage and freight must be stored in a manner that allows the driver to move freely and easily; allows riders to exit by any window or door in the event of an emergency; and protects riders from injury if the items fall or shift.

The combination of slopes and curves can make freeway on- and off-ramps dangerous for trucks. Remember that posted speed limits on ramps may be safe to be driven by cars but too fast to be driven by large or heavily-loaded vehicles.

During the vehicle inspection test, you will be asked to do a complete inspection of your vehicle. You will need to explain what you are inspecting and why.

In extremely hot weather, tire pressure can increase to dangerous levels due to the expansion of the air in heat. To keep an engine from overheating, it is important that there be enough oil and coolant in the engine compartment.

In work zones, you should observe posted speed limits. Slow down if road or weather conditions are poor, and slow down even further if workers are near the roadway.

When exiting your vehicle during the basic vehicle control skills test, you must face the vehicle and maintain three points of contact at all times. If your testing vehicle is a bus, you must maintain contact with the handrail. Exiting the vehicle incorrectly may result in automatic failure of the basic control skills test.

To avoid becoming fatigued on a long trip, you should take a break after every 100 miles or two hours of driving. Driving through the night, or during any other time when you would normally be asleep, raises the danger of fatigue.

During the on-road driving skills test, you may be asked to enter an expressway. Before doing so, you must check traffic, use proper signals, and merge smoothly into the proper lane.
