If confronted by an aggressive driver, the most important thing to do is try to get out of their way. Avoid making eye contact with the driver and do not let yourself be provoked by gestures. Do not try to challenge aggressive drivers by speeding up.

If at least one-fourth of the leaves in a leaf spring are missing, the vehicle will be put out-of-service until the defect is fixed.

If you must drive slowly, you should warn drivers behind you by turning on your emergency flashers, as long as local law permits their use.

Low beam headlights should be used for best visibility, even during the day. Using high beam headlights around other drivers can be dangerous.

Before driving, be sure to check the tank's body for dents or cracks. You should also check around and under the vehicle for signs of leaks. It is a crime to carry gases or liquids in a leaking tank.

Hydroplaning is an effect in which a vehicle's tires lose traction with the surface of the road and instead glide along a layer of water. There does not have to be a large amount of water on the road for this to occur.

Do not assume that posted height clearances are accurate. If the road was repaved after the sign was posted, or if there is packed snow on the ground, the actual height of the opening may be different than what is indicated. If you are not confident that your vehicle will be able to safely clear an upcoming bridge or overpass, you should slow down and find another path, if possible.

Hazardous materials should always be loaded away from heat sources. Many materials become more hazardous if their temperatures increase.

Before loading or unloading a tank with flammable liquids, you should turn off the engine, unless running the engine is necessary to operate a pump. Ground the tank before opening the filling hole and maintain the ground until after closing the filling hole.

Most heavy vehicles with manual transmissions require double clutching to change gears. A driver should release the accelerator, push in the clutch, and shift into neutral at the same time. After releasing the clutch and allowing the vehicle to change to the necessary speed, the driver should push in the clutch, shift gears, then simultaneously release the clutch and accelerate.

When carrying Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosives, you should not park within 300 feet of a bridge, tunnel, or building, unless you are parking for a short period of time while performing an operational necessity, like refueling.

A vehicle should be inspected before every trip to help ensure that any small mechanical issues are caught before they become more serious problems. It is better to discover a problem with your vehicle before a drive than after the drive has begun.

For all shipments of hazardous materials, the shipper must use shipping papers to inform drivers and dockworkers of the risks presented by the cargo.

For applicable materials, the "Poison Inhalation Hazard" placard and the appropriate hazard class placard must always be displayed, even for small amounts of the materials.

You may have to swing right to safely make a left turn. If there are two left turn lanes available at an intersection, you should always begin your turn in the rightmost lane.

Swerving out of the way of a hazard is sometimes safer than trying to stop before reaching the hazard. You can usually turn away from something more quickly than you can come to a complete stop. However, swerving while in a vehicle that is either top-heavy or pulling multiple trailers may result in a rollover.

Tank vehicles have a high centers of gravity and are therefore particularly vulnerable to rollover. To lower this risk, tank vehicles should be driven well below the posted speed limit on curves.

When driving on packed snow, you should reduce your speed by one-half or more. It can be difficult to stop or turn when operating on a slippery surface, so you must adjust your speed to drive safely under such conditions.

Cylinders and drums are often used to contain hazardous materials. Be sure to take the proper precautions if transporting a cargo of hazardous materials.

During a pre-trip inspection, you should activate your lights, then get out of the vehicle to look at them.
