Always be aware of what is happening around your vehicle. Constantly observing your surroundings to the front, sides, and rear of your vehicle will help you see problems that may require you to change speed or roadway position.

You must yield to any transit vehicle that is signaling to pull back onto the main roadway after it has stopped to load or unload passengers. Change lanes, slow down, or stop to allow the bus safe re-entry into traffic.

If you are being followed too closely by another driver, merge into a different lane. If there is no lane available for merging, wait until the road ahead is clear and slowly reduce your speed. This will encourage the tailgater to drive around you.

This sign means that it is not safe for drivers to enter the indicated road or driveway from their current direction. If you come across one of these signs, you should immediately turn around and drive a different way.

Because large commercial vehicles have large blind spots on each side, you should avoid driving beside them for long periods of time.

If the weather changes suddenly, you will need to adjust your driving to adapt. Always slow down when driving in rainy or foggy conditions. Be especially aware of vehicles behind you that may be going too fast for conditions.

On a multilane highway, slower traffic should travel in the right lane. Use the left lane to pass slower-moving traffic.

Flashing red lights, lowered crossing gates, and/or bells at a railroad crossing mean that you must come to a complete stop. You must not go across the tracks until the lights and bells have stopped and the crossing gates are completely up. Do not drive around or under a gate that is moving up or down.

Always turn your head to check behind your vehicle before and while backing up. Be sure the way is clear of other traffic before moving.

If you encounter an aggressive driver, you should make every attempt to get out of their way. You should avoid making eye contact with a hostile driver. Challenging a hostile driver by speeding up may only make them angrier, thereby increasing their danger.

As speed increases, the chance of a fatality increases. If you are moving faster than 80 miles per hour, you have almost no chance of living through a crash. Driving more slowly than other traffic can also be dangerous because other motorists may become impatient and make dangerous moves to pass you.

When driving near heavy trucks, other drivers and highway users must make allowances for the increased stopping distance required by the large vehicles. Drivers of smaller vehicles should remain in locations where they can be seen by the driver of the large vehicle and where their view of traffic is not blocked by the vehicle.

You should not stop in a travel lane for any reason. Instead, keep moving until you can safely pull off of the road. If you miss your turn or exit, do not back up. Go to the next turn or exit or where you can safely turn around.

When turning left at an intersection, you must yield to oncoming bicycles in the same manner that you would yield to oncoming motor vehicles. Keep your wheels straight while waiting to turn and proceed when the way is clear of traffic and pedestrians.

Pentagonal signs indicate that you are in a school zone. Be extra alert to children and pedestrians when driving near a school.

You must always stop on a two-lane road for a school bus that has its red or amber signal lights flashing as it is stopped to unload passengers. On a road with four or more lanes, you do not need to stop if the stopped bus is on the opposite side of the road. You do not need to stop if the bus is in a passenger loading zone that is completely off the main road.

You must turn on your headlights any time conditions prevent you from seeing other vehicles. Other drivers may have trouble seeing you, too.

Warning signs alert drivers to upcoming hazards and are usually yellow with black markings. This sign warns drivers about potential traffic merging into their lane from the right.

You do not need to stop upon meeting a stopped school bus when you are traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with at least four lanes. You should always exercise caution when driving near children.

On a four-lane highway, slower traffic should travel in the right lane. Use the left lanes to pass slower-moving traffic.

You must stop at a railroad crossing where signs, warning devices, or flaggers warn you of the presence of a train. It is illegal to drive around lowered gates.

South Carolina has an implied consent law. This means that by driving in the state, you give your consent to take a chemical test for intoxication, if called upon to do so.

At a four-way stop, you must yield the right-of-way to drivers who arrived before you. Wait your turn to enter the intersection.

Even if a vehicle is properly equipped with rearview and outside mirrors, it still has blind spots that cannot be seen in the mirrors. Large trucks have much larger blind spots than most passenger vehicles.

This sign prohibits drivers from making a U-turn. You cannot turn around to go in the opposite direction at an intersection where this sign is posted.

You must use your headlights at any time when conditions prevent you from seeing other vehicles and when it may be difficult for other drivers to see you. Always use your low beam headlights if weather conditions require you to use your windshield wipers.

When you see an emergency vehicle using its lights or hear it using its siren, you must immediately pull over to the curb or side of the road and stop.

South Carolina has an implied consent law. By driving in the state, you automatically give your consent to be tested for levels of any dangerous controlled substance. If you refuse to be tested, your license will be suspended for six months. This is in addition to any suspension that you may receive if you are convicted of driving under the influence.

If you are on an entrance or acceleration ramp and are entering interstate traffic, you should yield to drivers already on the interstate highway. Merge safely into traffic when you are able to do so.

A double yellow line means that traffic moving in both directions is prohibited from crossing the centerline to pass.
