Lane control signals are used when the direction of the flow of traffic in a specific lane changes throughout the day. They are used to show which lanes of traffic are open and closed, as well as to show if toll booths are open or closed. When a lane control signal contains a steady yellow X, drivers should clear the indicated lane because the signal is about to change to a red X.

Crosswalk lines show pedestrians where to safely cross a road or street. Crosswalks may be marked by horizontal lines, vertical lines, or a combination of the two. You must always stop for pedestrians who are in a crosswalk.

When turning left at a traffic signal, you must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and oncoming traffic.

Street racing, also known as drag racing, is illegal and can result in serious injuries or fatalities. Due to the high speeds, drivers are unable to react to common road hazards and other driving situations, often resulting in crashes.

If a driver's left arm and hand are extended upward, they are indicating that they intend to turn right. Adjust your driving accordingly if following a driver who is using this hand signal.

Chevron signs like this indicate that the road curves sharply in the direction indicated by the chevron (in this case, to the left). There may be several chevron signs placed throughout a curve.

Always be prepared to yield to any oncoming trains before crossing railroad tracks, particularly if there are no lights or gates controlling the crossing. Never start to cross the tracks until there is room for your entire vehicle on the other side of the tracks. Due to the risk of a vehicle stalling, it is not wise to shift gears when crossing railroad tracks.

A triangular red and white yield sign means that you must decrease speed as you approach an intersection and yield the right-of-way to any vehicles or pedestrians in the intersection. You must be prepared to stop if conditions require it.

To check your blind spot, glance over your shoulder in the direction that you want to move.

When driving on a numbered highway outside of an urban district, the speed limit is 70 miles per hour. If a different speed limit is posted, follow the posted speed limit.

Work zone signs are orange and indicate that some type of work is being performed on or alongside the roadway. Be extremely careful when you see these signs.

Motorcycles are entitled to the width of a full lane. Be sure your vehicle is entirely in the left lane before attempting to pass a motorcycle on the left.

You should avoid making any sudden changes in speed or direction when driving on a slippery surface. Reduce your speed on slippery roads and do not use cruise control.

If you are involved in a crash, move your vehicle off of the road and stop, if possible. If anyone is injured, call 911 and provide appropriate help. You must report the crash to law enforcement if there is an injury, a death, and/or more than $1,000 in property damage (or more than $200 worth of damage made to non-vehicle government property, such as signs or guardrails).

If an approaching driver fails to dim their high beams, glance toward the right side of the road. This will keep you from being blinded by the other vehicle’s headlights and will allow you to see enough of the road to stay on course until the other vehicle has passed.

Some highways reserve the left lane for vehicles with two or more occupants. These High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes are identified by signs and diamond pavement symbols.

Reduce your speed when roads are snow-covered or icy. Doing this and increasing your following distance are the most important techniques for avoiding crashes under snowy or icy conditions.

Yellow lines are used to separate traffic moving in opposite directions. Solid lines indicate that drivers are not permitted to pass.

If a yellow panel with the message "Exit only" is on a highway sign, the lane below the sign will not continue through the interchange. Instead, the lane will go off of the roadway to form a ramp. If you are in a lane directly under an "Exit only" sign, you may change lanes to move through the interchange or you must exit the highway.

Persons who are upset, angry, or otherwise distracted by their emotions should take time to cool off before driving a car. Taking out frustrations or anger while driving is exercising very poor judgment and is very dangerous to both the driver and others on the road.

Drivers must always yield to pedestrians in the street, even if they are crossing against a red light or are otherwise being careless.

Slow down and increase your following distance when the road is wet, when the road is crowded, and/or when your vision is limited. You should always be able to stop within the area you can see ahead of your car.

When driving on a county road that is adjacent to a public beach, the speed limit is 15 miles per hour. If a different speed limit is posted, follow the posted speed limit.

When changing lanes or turning, signal your intentions well in advance. The law requires that you signal for at least 100 feet before you move your vehicle to the right or left. Before pulling away from a curb, always signal to inform passing drivers of your intentions.

Do not become distracted by looking at passengers, attempting to find something in your vehicle, looking at reading material, sightseeing, or daydreaming while driving. If a driver near you seems distracted, allow them extra space because the risk of an accident is increased by their inattentiveness.

Warning signs that indicate approaching hazards are usually yellow with black lettering or symbols. Warning signs in work zones are orange with black lettering or symbols.

If your vehicle begins to skid, remain calm. Steer in the direction that you want to go and try not to overcorrect.

When approaching a roundabout, slow down. A roundabout is designed to be driven at a low speed.

Before passing, you must make sure the passing lane is clear and give the proper turn signal to show you are going to change lanes.

When on a roadway with two or more lanes, you should make room for entering vehicles. If there is no one driving next to you, move over one lane.
