Always be sure that you are driving in a manner that will allow your vehicle to come to a complete stop, if necessary, within the area of the road ahead that you are able to see.

If you are turning to avoid a hazard, do not apply the brakes while you are turning. This could easily lock the wheels and create a skid.

When operating a double or triple, the shut-off valves at the rear of last trailer should be closed. All other shut-off valves should be open.

Brakes can get out of adjustment quickly, especially if they are used to the point of overheating. Brake adjustment should be checked frequently.

It is important to observe other drivers' behaviors and identify clues that indicate when person could be driving impaired. Drivers who have had too much to drink, are sleepy, are on drugs, or are ill can present hazards to other drivers. A person driving with their window open in cold weather may be impaired.

Fatigue and lack of alertness are major hazards when driving at night. Most people are the least alert at night, especially after midnight.

If you must drive so slowly that you will impede the flow of traffic, you should turn on your four-way flashers to alert drivers behind you (as long as local laws allow the use of flashers).

When checking your vehicle's tires, you should confirm that air pressure is neither too low nor too high; that there is at least 4/32 of an inch of tread depth in every major groove on the front tires; and that radial and bias-ply tires are not used together.

If you are being tailgated, you should increase the distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. This will reduce your need to make sudden moves, and will also allow the tailgater more room to pass you. Speeding up when being tailgated is not advised because it may result in the tailgater continuing to follow you closely at the higher speed, only increasing the danger.

Stay as far away from a fire as possible and aim your fire extinguisher at the source or base of the fire, not at the flames. It may be appropriate to extinguish certain fires with water. If you are unsure of how to treat a specific fire, you should wait for trained firefighters to arrive.

A trailer may swing out and strike other vehicles if its wheels lock up. This is especially likely with lightly-loaded trailers.

When driving a tractor-trailer combination that is equipped with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), you should brake in the same manner that you would if the vehicle was not equipped with ABS.

After starting the engine, warning lights and buzzers should go out right away. If a light stays on, it usually indicates an issue with the vehicle.

The air compressor of an air brake system is connected to the engine through gears or a v-belt. The compressor may be air-cooled or cooled by the engine cooling system.

Combination vehicles require more space on the road than other vehicles. When entering or crossing traffic while driving a combination vehicle, it is especially important that there is a large enough gap in traffic for you to safely do so.

On a vehicle with one or more trailers, mirror adjustment can only be checked accurately if the trailers are straight. Mirror adjustment should be checked before the start of every trip.
