Dhol is a favourite folk instrument of Punjab. It is a percussion instrument, which is used not only at male dance performances, but also during social rituals and festive celebrations.
The drummer is called Dholi or Bharaj. The dhol is a barrel-shaped wooden drum with a mounted skin on both sides. It is played with two different types of wooden sticks. The skin on either side is tightened at a different pitch.

Doli Songs are sung at the departure of the Doli. This is the time of separation. The girl has a heavy heart since she has to bid farewell to her parents and parental home.
At the same time, there is a subdued thrill at the prospect of her going to her husband's house. The Doli songs are very heart touching.

Saranda is a large bowl shaped string instrument played with bow which produces a beautiful deep tone quality. This instrument took birth from the passion for folk music of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

Sarangi is a wooden instrument about two feet long which is cut from a single log of wood and covered with parchment. Modern sarangis contain 35 - 40 sympathetic strings running under the main strings. It is an ideal instrument for producing all types of Gamks and Meends.

Rabab is a plucked instrument made of wood which has double belly. The first belly is covered with parchment and the second is covered with wood. It was used by Mardana when Guru Nanak Ji sung his divine Shabads.

Dafli is made of double ring with double row of bells and its surface is 10 inch wide in diameter. It is also known as Daf, Tambourine or Dappler.

Garah is simple earthen pitcher which serves as a musical instrument in folk songs. The Garah player strikes its sides with rings worn on fingers of one hand and also plays on its open mouth with the other hand to produce a distinct rhythmic beat.

The Gurmat Sangeet contains the bani of Saints and the Sikh Gurus. It is also known as Shabad Kirtan. It is a combination of devotional music, folk music and classical music. The main feature of Gurmat Sangeet is that it is sung in Pard taal, a style of singing which has its major compositions in dhrupad and khayal.

Sardool Sikander is a Punjabi folk singer, sometimes called 'The King of Bhangra', born in the Kheri Naudh Singh in district Fatehgarh Sahib. He belongs to the Patiala Gharana of music. He made his first appearances on radio and television in the early 1980s with his introductory album, 'Roadways Di Laari'.

Sapp is largely used in dances like Giddha and Bhangra. It is a type of clapper. By stretching and contracting its ends, it produces a sound resembling many hands clapping together.

The Osier Bast, a straw commonly known as Sarkanda is interwoven with bast, reeds, rushes and corn husks to make basket, Chhaj, Hand fan, Chiks etc.

Tabla is a most popular percussion instrument. It includes a pair of drums in which one is for treble (dayan) and the other is for bass (bayan).
This kind of double drum combination is believed to have been designed by Hazrat Amir Khusrau.

On the basis of type of work, patterns and style, phulkari can also be categorised as Bagh and Chope. Bagh (garden) is the style of Phulkari which covers the entire surface of cloth with embroidery of floral magnificence with contrasting silk threads. The designs are made by use of horizontal, vertical and diagonal stitches. In Chope style of Phulkari embroidery is made on handspun red khaddar with golden yellow threads.

Phulkari, literally meaning the flower work as the entire field of cloth is embroidered and filled with flowers. It is an art form in which exquisite embroidery is done over shawls, dupattas and headscarves. It is woven with silk threads on a coloured cotton cloth. In some cases, the entire cloth is covered with dense designs, so that the ground cloth becomes invisible. The design is worked with small squares in step-ladder fashion. The colours used in this embroidery signified clear symbols, i.e. red colour was used to symbolise passion, yellow or golden for desire, white denoted purity, green for fertility and abundance, blue for calmness and orange symbolised divine energy. In Amritsar and Firozpur, phulkari work of a high quality is done.

Paranda is one of the traditional handicrafts of Punjab. It is a colourful hanging worn by the Punjabi women in their hair. Most of the Punjabi women have long hair, which they plait and then tie a paranda at the end. Parandas are available with a great variety of designs and colours. They are made out of a bunch of silk threads, woven with other skillful works. Patiala paranda like Patiala salwar is very famous all over the Punjab.

Churidar and Kurta is the most common costume among Punjabi women. Salwar Kameez is another traditional costume of Punjab. Men generally wear the traditional dress of Kurta and Pajama. Some men also wear the traditional tehmat i.e Lungi with Kurta.
